The towers are hollow, 155 metres high each. Measuring 6 m square at the base and tapering to 4.75 × 4.50 m at the top. Wall thickness at the base is 1.50 m
When the bridge opened for traffic, 24 June 1981, it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world, not surpassed until 1998.
