Move heavy structures with our hydraulic skidding system

One of the biggest challenges in the construction industry is moving and positioning heavy structures, especially in confined spaces or restricted environments. Normally, moving the structures would be difficult, but our skidding system makes the work easier, or even possible. Skidding is particularly useful in locations where space is limited or where using a crane is not an option.

Our track system is developed for repeated movement of heavy loads, such as launching of caissons, transfer of offshore floaters or moving bridge sections during bridge launching.

The advantages of our hydraulic skidding system

The Bygging-Uddemann hydraulic skidding system is distinguished to others by being extremely robust (can handle loads up to 20,000 tons) and consist of two main components; skidway beams and steel tracks.

The skidway beams are skidding system supports made out of concrete on which the object to be moved will be skidded from the beginning to the end of the transfer lane. As well as where the object will rest between transfers. The steel tracks consist of 20mm x 300mm steel plates installed on structural concrete (continuous beams) on a base rest and fixed with mortar and screws embedded in concrete. The sides of the steel tracks allow skidding units to grip and pull to horizontally move the object.

Our hydraulic skidding equipment units (IP-CCVs) consist of jacks sitting on a base plate. The base plate has low friction pads that are attached underneath for sliding over the steel track. The skidding system can be used either at ground level or at a height and it has a user-friendly construction that easily adapts to each load size. This is because although each unit is small, linking several units provides an enormous lifting force.

For many tasks, a hydraulic skidding system is a much safer and more effective solution for moving complex objects such as cassions and offshore foundations, compared to cranes.


What makes Bygging Uddemann skidding systems different from others?

Our skidding system is unique in its combination of heavy lifting and skidding technology with the latest material developments in low-friction plastic and epoxy-treated sliding surfaces.

Our skidding equipment is a lightweight system with a very low construction height, which makes it easy to both set up and use. The system is very suitable for use when moving objects with limited insertion space.

In the development of our SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter) launch equipment, we have strived for simplicity and durability. The simplicity means that the system can easily be modified in lifting / moving capacity as entire skidding units (IP-CCV units) of 250 tons can be easily connected or removed as needed.

Durability has been achieved by minimizing the number of moving parts and using a low-friction skidding technique instead of traditional bearings. We have carried out over 2000 successful relocation work with a load weight from 3,000 tons up to 18,000 tons.

How does skidding work?

Each skidding unit (IP-CCV-unit) can lift 250 tons and carry its load along a therefore designed transfer lane. Lifting power is provided by two heavy lifting jacks sitting on a base plate. The base plate has low friction pads attached underneath for sliding on the transfer lane’s steel track. When not under load the units rest on four spring loaded wheels for easy relocation along the transfer lane.

The pushing jack has two 12,5 ton cylinders. A grip head has jaws gripping on a steel track mounted on the transfer lane.

What does IP-CCV mean?

IP-CCV stands for Individual Pushing Caisson Carrier Vehicle. It’s a highly specialized vehicle designed for the transport and support of constructing heavy structures, particularly in the context of production yards. This vehicle operates on a designated transfer steel track, demonstrating a remarkable capability of carrying up to 250 tons.

Its versatility is a standout feature, initially developed to move large concrete caissons weighing up to 7000 tons, but its utility extends far beyond. By adapting various configurations, it can also be employed for moving heavy loads like bridge sections in bridge launching projects. This adaptability makes the IP-CCV a critical component in constructing large-scale structures efficiently and effectively.

How fast is a skidding system?

For a caisson transfer the average speed is estimated to be 12-17 meters per hour, with a maximum of approximately 25 meters/hour. For other applications the speed is depending on pump capacity (liter/minute) and number of IP-CCV units operating.
