Steel Tank Construction

Steel tank construction according to the Bygging-Uddemann system

One of our most appreciated innovations on the world market is the Bygging-Uddemann Jacking System for Steel tanks. The system is a very cost-efficient way of constructing large-volume cisterns and has been developed from our knowledge of controlled heavy lifting technique with hydraulic jacks.

The Bygging-Uddemann system was introduced at the end of the 1950s to rationalize the erection of steel cisterns for various storage purposes. The system is used for cisterns of various design of all sizes. The construction and welding work is carried out entirely on the ground. This gives a high degree of safety and precision in the workmanship and facilitates the inspections required.

All work takes place under adequate protection and safety for the workmen. Most of the welding work is carried out inside the cistern, independently of the weather conditions. The method reduces construction time.

Bygging-Uddemann has been a leading supplier of steel tank equipment for many years, contact us when you need help constructing steel tanks.

Steel tank construction and repair

With our equipment, you can also replace a cistern base or perform foundation repairs.

Repair and maintenance of an existing cistern

The base of an old stainless steel cistern may have to be replaced. When the base plate has been cut free from the shell ring, the cistern is lifted to a sufficient height and the base plate is replaced. The cistern can then be lowered exactly in position again.

This method is also used to lift cisterns in order to repair or reinforce the foundation. Cistern which tilt as a result of uneven settling can also be lifted in this manner and straightened.

The lifiting trestles must be provided with a stable base for all of these operations.
Increasing the cistern capacity

The Bygging-Uddemann method makes it easy to increase the storage capacity of an existing steel cistern. An increase in capacity means that the bottom of the cistern must be provided with additional shell rings.

In some cases, special lifting trestles in which the jacks are placed at the top, are used depending on the size and weight of the cistern.

Moving stainless steel cisterns

Bygging-Uddemann jacks can be used to move steel cisterns horizontally for longer or shorter distances.

Contact us if you have to repair, increase the capacity or move an existing cistern.

Cost comparison

The steel tank erection set-up is a very cost-efficient way of constructing large-volume cisterns and has been developed from our knowledge of controlled heavy lifting technique with hydraulic jacks.

Time and labour

The Bygging-Uddemann steel tank set-up allows a complete cistern to be erected with hydraulics without the need of expensive construction cranes and with the minimum amount of labour.

FAQ

What is the max. width (diameter)?

Unlimited size. The only limitation is that there are enough jacks and lifting trestles available.

What is the min. width (diameter)?

If lifting trestles can be placed on the outside of the tank, there are no limitations more than what the shell plate can allow.

If lifting trestles must be on the inside of the tank, tank diameter cannot be less than ~4 m.

What is the max height?

No limits. In unusually high constructions and in windy workplaces, additional wind struts are used.

Is it possible to use the Bygging-Uddemann System for construction of single shell (wall) tanks?

Yes. Single shell tanks are built reliably with our steel tank jacking system.

Is it possible to use the Bygging-Uddemann System for construction of double shell tanks?

Yes. The shell walls can either be built one complete shell at a time or simultaneously. Trestles is placed on both the inside and outside of the tank.

Is it possible to use the Bygging-Uddemann System for construction of conical geometry?

Yes. For conical geometries, a gantry scaffold is used on which the jacks climb along.

Is it possible to use the Bygging-Uddemann System in combination with other techniques?

Yes. For example, a movable lifting equipment (telfer or similar) can be mounted on top of the roof. This can streamline the placing of plates around the tank.

Bygging-Uddemann’s system for Steel Tanks can also be combined with robot welding technology.
