Article: Accelerating Marine Infrastructure with Floating Dock Slipforming

FD1 visit

We are pleased to share a technical article authored by our customer, Penta-Ocean, highlighting the first successful offshore fabrication of reinforced concrete (RC) caissons in Japan using our gantry-based slipforming method on a floating dock. This innovative approach reduced construction time dramatically — from several months to just 8–9 days per unit.

In the article, the authors discuss:

  • The development of a digital application that automatically calculates the required retarder dosage to maintain consistent concrete setting despite significant temperature fluctuations.
  • How slipform technology was applied to construct large RC caissons offshore.
  • Innovative methods for monitoring and controlling early-age concrete strength and quality.
  • Key lessons learned from Japan’s first full-scale offshore project utilizing this construction method.

The project highlights how digitalization, advanced concrete technology, and innovative construction methods can deliver substantial efficiency gains in complex marine infrastructure projects.
